Elk Tags for Sale: Bull Elk Landowner Tags

How the Tag Works on Every Hunt We Book

The first thing most hunters ask us about a bull elk hunt is how they get the tag. On this page, the answer depends on the hunt. Our California and New Mexico hunts use landowner tags or vouchers. The Alberta hunt includes the license and tag in the price. Three hunts in Colorado and Idaho use over-the-counter tags you can buy for this season. The Montana, Wyoming, Nevada and southeast Colorado hunts go through the state draw, and we'll tell you your odds before you apply.

Serge has been hunting for more than 35 years and has been arranging guided hunts and landowner tags through Urge2Hunt since 2010. Every outfitter below is one he's hunted with or one that comes recommended by people he trusts.

Landowner Tags and Vouchers

California Tule Elk, $36,565

Landowner tags on a large private ranch in central California. These are five-day, one-on-one guided hunts between September and November, with meals and lodging included. Bulls here have typically scored 280 to 330, and it’s fair chase. If you’re working toward all 29 North American big game animals, this is one of the few ways to get a tule elk.

New Mexico Bull Elk, call for current price

New Mexico landowners receive vouchers they can sell to hunters, resident or not. We book guided voucher hunts in several of the state’s top trophy units, including the Gila, and we can sell you a voucher outright if you’d rather hunt on your own. Archery, muzzleloader and rifle seasons are all available, and we can also enter you in the outfitter draw.

Tag Included in the Price

Alberta Bull Elk, $6,175

Seven days on private land outside Peace River in northern Alberta. Your guide, meals, lodging, hunting license and tag are all in the price, so the only other costs are your flight and the tip. You can add whitetail, moose, black bear or wolf to the same trip.

Over-the-Counter Tags

Colorado, Units 4 to 42, $5,145

A five-day guided hunt for mature bulls on thousands of private acres, with meals and lodging included. Hunt the September rut with a bow, or come in October or November with a rifle. Since 2024, Colorado’s nonresident archery elk tags go through the draw, so out-of-state bowhunters apply first; rifle tags are over the counter. The outfitter takes very few hunters each year, so this one fills early.

Colorado, Unit 24, $2,318 (unguided drop camp)

A horseback pack-in to a set camp in the remote high country, with wall tents, cots, a stove and cooking gear waiting for you. You hunt on your own and bring your own food and sleeping bag. When you’re done, the outfitter packs out you, your gear, your meat, the hide and the antlers. Add mule deer or black bear with no extra trophy fee.

Idaho, $3,085 (unguided drop camp)

A six-day horseback drop camp 6 to 10 miles into the Nez Perce or Clearwater National Forest, for up to four hunters. Elk, deer and bear tags are all over the counter, so it works as a combo hunt.

Draw Tags

Montana, archery $5,145, rifle $6,695

More than 100,000 acres of private land in eastern Montana with very little hunting pressure. Tags are fairly easy to draw, and it’s common to see 200 to 400 elk on a hunt. Guide, meals and lodging are included, and you can add deer.

Wyoming, $5,665

Private ranch land that sees little hunting pressure, with meals and lodging on the ranch. Wyoming doesn’t let landowners sell elk licenses, so there’s no Wyoming landowner tag to buy, and this hunt uses the state draw. Nonresident elk applications close January 31.

Southeast Colorado, Unit 85, archery $5,665, rifle $6,695

An 8,000-acre ranch with meals and lodging included. Archery hunts run six days and rifle hunts five. Depending on the season, the tag is a draw or over the counter.

Nevada, Units 072 and 076 to 081, call for current price

More than 100,000 acres of private ranch land, much of it rarely hunted. Our groups have had a shot opportunity at a mature bull every season we’ve hunted here. These are draw tags, and hunters have drawn them with zero points.

Bull Elk Tag FAQ

Can you buy a landowner elk tag?

In some states. New Mexico landowners get vouchers they can sell to any hunter, and that’s how our New Mexico hunts work. California issues landowner tags for tule elk on private ranches. Colorado and Utah have landowner programs with their own transfer rules. Wyoming and Nevada elk tags come through the draw. Our guide to how landowner tags work by state goes through each one.

Can I hunt bull elk this season without points?

Yes, on most of these hunts. The two Colorado over-the-counter hunts and the Idaho drop camp use tags you can buy this season, the Alberta hunt includes the tag, and New Mexico vouchers can be bought outright while they last. California landowner tags are limited, so call first. The Montana, Wyoming and Nevada hunts follow each state’s draw calendar, with applications due in winter or spring for the fall season.

Tell us your state, your weapon and how many points you’re holding, and we’ll tell you which of these you can hunt this year. Call Serge at (415) 706-1204.
